Start Good Manners Early

Feb 23, 2016 03:38AM ● Published by Family Features

Learning good manners and etiquette can be confusing and complicated for many children, but getting them to embrace these social practices can help them become the sweet, polite individuals you've always dreamed they would become.

Here are 8 essential manners to instill in your children as early as possible:

Say "Please" and "Thank you" - These are the most elementary of manners - when asking for something, always say, "Please." When you have received something, always say, "Thank you."

Ask Permission - If you want to do something or use something, ask permission. Be sure to thank the person you are talking to, regardless of their response.

Don't Interrupt - Unless it is an emergency, do not barge in on a conversation between adults. Instead, wait until the adults have finished talking and they will attend to you.

Don't Use Bad Words - Grown-ups are well aware of profanity. When profane words come from children it is disagreeable and disrespectful to everyone around.

Cover Your Mouth - When you cough or sneeze, always cover your mouth with the inside of your elbow and use facial tissue. Also, be sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer when you're done.

Use a Napkin - When eating, always have a napkin in your lap, ready for messes. When you have finished eating, dab your face with the napkin to make sure it is clean.

Be Thankful - If you are not interested in an activity or a food someone has exposed you to, be thankful and pretend you are interested. You will hurt someone's feelings if you tell them you dislike what they have made or done for you.

Offer to Help - Whether in class or at a family holiday dinner, being helpful never goes unnoticed. Offer to help someone if they are working on something or carrying something heavy.

Once these manners become embedded in the daily lives of your children, they'll be well on their way to social success. But, remember, good habits like these don't form overnight. Use persistence and someday you'll see your efforts have paid off.
