The Cabarrus Brewing Co. Run Club began in April of this year and is a running group that meets once weekly to run off the brews. Despite it's young age, the weekly runs have brought in an increasing number of runners each week.

We had a chance to hear from Bill Dusch, the founder and organizer, to learn more about the Run Club.

How did the Run Club get started?

BD: Back in January, I had the good fortune of meeting Steve Steinbacher, founder of Cabarrus Brewing Co.  Sarah Porter and I were working with Steve on the planning of a United Way event in early March at the yet-to-be-completed brewery.

As Steve and I talked, it became evident that what he was building was more than a brewery to supply craft beer.  His goal is to build community with Cabarrus Brewing is a way to make this happen.  When Steve found out that I was an avid runner, I could see the gears in his head start spinning.  Before long he asked me if I would consider starting a running club for the brewery.  Seeing what Steve was trying to do, the decision was easy for me to say yes.

What was the first run like? How many attended?

BD: With the creation of the Cabarrus Brewing Co. Run Club on Facebook, and discussions with my running friends (including my wife Debbie), the first run was planned for early April.

The course was a 3 mile track through the streets of Wilmar near Cabarrus Brewing.  The first run was amazingly successful with over 50 individuals showing up.  Since then we have continued to grow, now having almost 500 members in the Cabarrus Brewing Run Club group.

When do these runs typically take place?

BD: Our themed runs start each Thursday evening at 6:30 PM with runners having a choice of a 3 or 5 mile course. Last week our theme was a Summer Solstice run and next week being our July 4th Independence Run.

Is everyone that participates experienced runners?

BD: I say runners, but our participants are quite varied that include fast runners, joggers, families with dogs and baby strollers or just happy walkers.  After our run we meet our fellow runners and friends back at Cabarrus Brewing.  This is becoming a part of our community created at Cabarrus Brewing Co.

What else should we know?
