The Davis Theater 2016-2017 Season 

         The Davis Theatre is located in the Historic Cabarrus County Courthouse, at 65 Union St. S, Concord.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.CabarrusArtsCouncil.org and at the Davis Theatre Box Office Monday-Friday, 10 a.m-4 p.m., in person or by phone, 704-920-2753.

            There is a 7% discount for people who buy tickets to all five of the performances in the flagship On Stage at the Davis series. The five are Grammy Award-winning singer Kathy Mattea who is known for hits such as “18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses”; the 2014 and 2015 IBMA “Vocal Group of the Year” Balsam Range; Kruger Brothers, who play folk music fused with classical; genre-bending cellist Ben Sollee; and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member The Drifters. Embassy Suites Concord is the Gold Sponsor of On Stage at the Davis and Hilbish Ford is sponsoring The Drifters performance.

         Three local favorites also will return: Jeff Whittington Bluegrass Band, Jim Avett and Jeff Little Trio.

Coming Up

Davis Theatre Ticket Sales Open – Friday, July 1. Sales have begun for tickets to all performances in the 2016-17 Davis Theatre season, which includes Kathy Mattea, Kruger Brothers, Balsam Range, Ben Sollee, The Drifters, Jeff Little Trio, Jim Avett and Jeff Whittington Bluegrass Show. Youth Class, Flight Academy – Thursday, Aug. 11, 3 p.m., Concord Library; or Wednesday, Aug. 17, 10:30 a.m., Mount Pleasant Library. Art Camp for Ages 5-13 – Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m., July 11-15,  July 18-22,  July 25-29,  August 1-5,  August 8-12, Brenda’s Art Studio, 1211 Winecoff School Rd., Concord. Students will experience creativity in drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture, and crafts including Paracord bracelets, basket making, tie-dye, and copper tooling. Ages 12-18 will have the opportunity to unlock their inner graffiti artist or Jackson Pollock by exploring new, unique and messy ways to paint with things you can find around the house.  Free. Exhibition, Cabarrus Art Guild – Until July, Cabarrus Art Guild Street-Level Gallery, 11 Union St. S, Concord. The Cabarrus Art Guild’s annual Spring Judged Show includes 2D and 3D works, including photography, digital altered photography and fiber art. The Cabarrus Art Guild is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., but the show can be viewed any time the building is open. Open Studio, Art Guild Gallery – Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Cabarrus Art Guild, 1 Union St. S, Concord. The Gem Theatre, Finding Dory  –The Gem Theatre, 111 W 1st St., Kannapolis. The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish reunites with her loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way in this sequel to Disney’s Finding Nemo. Students will experience multiple techniques in hand building clay including:  pinch, draped, coil, slab, methods as well as throwing on the potter’s wheel.  Pottery will be fired and students will glaze each piece in this class directed by Brenda Hardin. Students will learn how to set the resolution of their scans, scan multiple items in one scan and scan small images into larger images. $20. Class, Beginning Watercolor – Thursdays, July 14, 21 or 28, 10 a.m.-noon, Cabarrus Art Guild, 11 Union St. S, Concord. Susan Lackey will teach this class designed for people who have never painted in watercolors or have had very limited experience. The course consists of a series of three classes during one month. Class, Bird Dance Saturdays, July 16 and Aug. 13, 10 a.m.-noon, Cabarrus Art Guild. Master quilter Susan Edmonson will lead this class on designer Sue Spargo’s fancy bird quilt. Students will make a block each month and commit to participate in the class for a year. Students will use cotton, linen and wool fabrics and lots of embellishments. $25 per class. Ages 12-18 will learn how to create and publish their own web comics in this workshop with graphic artist and illustrator Bob Morgan. Free. Art Camp, All Things Animals – Monday-Friday, July 18-22, Harrisburg Town Hall, 4100 Main St., Harrisburg. Campers ages 3-5 will use paint, printmaking techniques, oil pastel, mixed media collage, recycled items and clay to create all things animals. Campers will explore different animals through storybooks and their own imagination to create fun, silly and realistic art pieces. $135.

Artists will learn important techniques that will transform any drawing and painting.  Instruction will range from life-drawing to abstraction.  Media will include, but not be limited to pencil, charcoal, pastel, and acrylic. Using yarn to weave and crochet, scrap fabric to create a dream catcher, string to create jewelry and simple hand sewing techniques, campers will create timeless handcrafted pieces. $135.
