Final sessions bring seniors free help with Medicare Enrollment
Participate in Medicare Enrollment sessions through December 7

Seniors have options when it comes to selecting Medicare plans. Cabarrus County Department of Human Services is offering free one-on-one counseling to review Medicare plan information and share which options can help you take full advantage of available healthcare benefits. The special sessions are offered as a service of the North Carolina’s Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP).

This year, Cabarrus expanded its SHIIP counseling sessions to more locations in an effort to provide more accessibility to services. Counselors will hold one final week of free sessions; however, you must schedule an appointment.

Available sessions include November 30 at the Concord Library; December 1 at the Department of Human Services and the Cabarrus County Senior Center in Concord; December 6 at Kannapolis City Hall; and December 7 at the Cabarrus County Senior Center in Concord.

The Medicare open enrollment period runs through December 7. During that time, seniors can compare, select and enroll in the plan that best meets their needs. All changes made during this time will be effective January 1, 2017.

Plans change each year, so it is important to compare plans to make sure you enroll in the one best suited to your current needs. Anyone with Medicare-related questions is free to call a SHIIP counselor, even if they are not currently enrolled in Medicare.

Cabarrus County SHIIP has participated in the Medicare Annual Enrollment since 2005. Already this year, Cabarrus DHS helped more than 250 individuals find the right plan for them.

“This year, most people are asking for help to compare plans, cost and coverage. They’re also asking about enrollment for their Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage and Medicare Advantage Plans,” said Kathy Mowrer, program administrator for Cabarrus County’s Adult and Aging Division of Human Services. “There’s been a strong showing from those who are new to Medicare and those researching Medicare Supplemental Insurance. We want to make sure everyone fully understands their options.”

Representatives are available to schedule your personal session Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and may be reached by calling Cabarrus County Department of Human Services’ Adult & Aging Service division at 704-920-1400 (when prompted select option 7, then option 2) or visit

SHIIP representatives do not sell any products or policies, do not conduct market research and the SHIIP program is not related to any insurance companies. SHIIP maintains a counseling program and counselors provide accurate, objective information, so that you can make a better-informed decision.
