Dance the Night Away at the Concord Swing Dance Festival

Mar 21, 2017 08:26PM ● By Melanie Heisinger

Swing Dance enthusiasts, get ready for an evening of music, dancing and fun!

Positively Ballroom Dance Studio will be hosting the Concord Swing Dance Festival on Friday, March 31 at the Cabarrus Country Club. The festival will kick off at 7:30pm with a Swing Dance Class and will proceed with general dancing from 8:00 - 11:00pm.

This event celebrates some of the most popular forms of American Swing Dancing still being practiced, performed and enjoyed by countless people today. These Swing dance styles include Carolina Shag, East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Hustle and West Coast Swing.

At this exciting event, there will be a DJ playing a very wide variety of music featuring songs from the 1920's all the way up to pop, rock and country favorites of today.

Get ready to dress dressy-casual to semi-formal and dance the night away, as well as enjoy some tasty hors d'oeuvres.

We were able to get in touch with one of Positively Ballroom's primary instructor and managing member, Ryan Knight, to learn a little bit more about this fun event and history of Positively Ballroom.

Positively Ballroom Dance Studio opened on January 2004 in Locust, NC. Over the course of the next couple of years the company expanded its base of operations and opened studios in Albemarle and Indian Trail, NC.

In  2011, owners Ryan and Mary Knight decided to change direction and centralize their business in Concord, NC. Ryan, being a native of Union County, visited the Concord area often as a child. As a boy walking the downtown streets, he was always drawn to the area, even imagining what it might be like to be a business owner with a shop right on Union Street.

It seems that sometimes dreams can come true. Positively Ballroom Dance Studio is located at 70 Union Street S, and has been operating in the Concord area for 6 years. Ryan and Mary enjoy working with local community and through Positively Ballroom Dance Studio, they have been able to create and produce several annual events that support the local area:

  • Dancing for the Arts (in conjunction with the Cabarrus Arts Council)
  • The "Thriller" Costume Ball
  • Concord Swing Dance Festival

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your role at Positively Ballroom?

Our business is family owned and operated. I am the primary instructor and managing member. As a professional dancer and teacher I have over 25 years of experience in the field. Mary is a life-long dancer with training in ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance. She has been involved in Ballroom dancing for 13 years. We currently employ 6 additional teachers that carry experience in various dance styles.

Some of my personal achievements include:
  • 1995 regional (NC, SC & VA) Teacher of the Year recipient
  • 2002 Regional Pro-Am Latin champion
  • 2003 Regional Amateur Theatrical champion
  • 2005 Regional Pro-Am Theatrical champion
  • 2008, 2009, & 2010 Olympian award winner for teaching excellence

There's a fun upcoming event, "Concord Swing Dance Festival," that Positively Ballroom will be hosting! How did the idea for that come about? Is this the first one?

For a number of years we made an annual trip to an event held in Asheville, NC called the Big Band Swing weekend. We saw the event change over time and we were disappointed in the overall experience our last couple of trips. We realized that we could take a similar concept and do something that would benefit the local area.

In 2016, we hosted the very first Concord Swing Dance Festival to great success. We hope to be able to repeat the same level of interest for 2017.

Can anyone attend?

The event is open to the public as a family friendly event. Teens and up are welcomed to attend. We are offering family ticket discounts to encourage people to bring their teens and young adults.

How has the planning process been?

This being our second year, the planning process has been very easy. It helps to have people willing to pitch in and take some of the planning duties like decorations and marketing, which are two of the more important things to help make an event successful.

Where can someone purchase tickets?

We have a limit of only 100 tickets for this event so we recommend that you not wait until the last minute.

Advanced tickets may be purchased online for $25 a piece at, or by phone at 704-858-1996.

Tickets will also be available at the door for $30 a piece while available.
For family discounts please call the number given. Family discounts will not be available at the door without prior consent so please be sure to call.
