Meals for Wheels is a nonprofit organization that provides meals for seniors and those who need them. This meaningful nonprofit has impacted the lives of hundreds of local Cabarrus County seniors since its inception in 1974.
Tell us a little bit about Cabarrus Meals on Wheel. When and how did it get started?Cabarrus Meals on Wheels assists home bound seniors and disabled adults remain in their homes with the delivery of a hot, nutritious meal. Volunteers deliver the meals and provide daily contact with the senior.
We began servicing seniors in 1974, In 2009, we began preparing the meals in-house.
On average, we feed 400 people each day. We prepared and served 117,000 meals last year. We also provide pet food, birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, frozen meals for the weekend, and emergency groceries to our clients.
Congratulations on the grant from Subaru! How did that pairing come about?Beginning November 17, 2016 to January 3, 2017, customers who purchased or leased a new Subaru vehicle could select from a list of charities to receive a donation of $250 from Subaru of America, Inc. This year, Subaru of America, Inc. donated nearly $23.4 million to participating national and local charities, reaching a nine-year total of nearly $94 million in donations through the Subaru Share the Love Event.
Subaru of America, Inc. selected the four national charities: ASPCA®, Make-A-Wish®, Meals On Wheels America® and National Park Foundation. Subaru retailers could also elect to add a local charity and Subaru Concord selected Cabarrus Meals on Wheels as its “hometown charity” for the third consecutive year.
Subaru Concord has been a long standing community partner with Cabarrus Meals on Wheels, working together on many projects over the last 6 years including delivering meals once or twice per month, non-perishable food drives and pet food drives.
Since we have partnered with Subaru Concord they have donated $42,862 for meals. This has provided 15,000 meals to seniors throughout Cabarrus County!
Was this the first time Meals on Wheels teamed up with Subaru?Subaru Concord began delivering for us 6 years ago. Subaru America partnered with Meals on Wheels America for Subaru Share the Love nine years ago. We became Subaru Concord’s Hometown Charity three years ago.
Who will benefit now that Meals on Wheels received the grant? We use funds to provide meals to home bound seniors who are unable to afford a nutritious meal. A majority of our clients live on a fixed income, Social Security, of less than $800 per month. This grant helps us provide that next meal for many who may not know how they will get that next meal.
What if someone wants to help, are donations accepted? How about volunteers? We accept pet food donations and monetary donations at our office 1701 S Main Street; Kannapolis NC 28081.
Volunteers are always needed to deliver the meals. Volunteers are needed daily on our 30 routes throughout the county. Pick up of meals is 10:30 and each route usually takes between 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. Our volunteers not only provide a basic need, but they also provide a little companionship into the life of someone who may not see another person during the day.
Please call our office 704.932.3412 or visit www.cabarrusmow.org.
We rely on donations and grants to sustain our program. Without supporters, such as Subaru, we would not be able to continue to provide a basic need to a very vulnerable population.
