Once upon a time, Concord, Kannapolis and Mt. Pleasant were sleepy little towns in a sleepy little county on the outskirts of Charlotte, which also was, by national standards…sleepy.
Charlotte is now a thriving metropolis – the number two banking center in the country – and Cabarrus County was recently rated one of the fasted growing regions in the country by Forbes Magazine. The change we thought had eluded us for so many decades has finally caught up – and the historic structures that have been iconic to our county are no exception.
This month we are excited to give you the inside scoop on three projects that will dramatically affect the face of three of this county’s historic districts while simultaneously ushering in a new era of commerce and residential growth.
Over the past year, developers have been working hard to transform the once-proud Hotel Concord into a high-end apartment building. As construction ends and leasing begins, we’ve got an inside look at the changes taking place.
Dr. Allen Dobson has moved on to a new project in Mt. Pleasant. This time he’s restoring a former hosiery mill into a restaurant the likes of which Mt. Pleasant has never seen before.
Finally, Kannapolis has broken ground on a 20-year renovation project that will completely change the face of its downtown. When the dust settles, there will be a new ball park for the Kannapolis Intimidators, hotels, apartments/condos and a retail center to rival that of areas like Birkdale and SouthPark.
Some may say these changes are not positive. They want to desperately hold on to the past and heritage we all hold so dear. But I would encourage them to look to our bright future. These projects aren’t designed to forget our past, but rather to honor those that laid the foundation for our area by continuing their mission to press forward and keep looking ahead.
P.S. Happy Holidays! Thanks for making this year the most successful yet for Cabarrus Magazine!
