David Murdock, UNCC are 2009 Charlotte Regional Partnership Jerry Award recipients

David Murdock, chief executive of Dole Foods and visionary behind the North Carolina Research Campus, and UNC Charlotte will be the Charlotte Regional Partnership’s 2009 Jerry Award recipients. UNC System President Erskine Bowles, who served as former President Bill Clinton’s White House chief of staff, will present the keynote address. Business and civic leader Ruth Shaw, current chair of UNC Charlotte’s board of directors and former CEO of Duke Power Company, is serving as honorary chair of the event.

Ronnie Bryant, president and CEO of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, said no one is more deserving of the 2009 private-sector award than David Murdock. “He not only was instrumental in creating hundreds of jobs in Gaston County at the Dole Fresh Vegetables plant, but his vision for a collaborative, public-private research facility focused on health and wellness has come to fruition in Kannapolis at the North Carolina Research Campus. Both endeavors have and will continue to generate thousands of jobs and attract businesses that will help drive our regional economy.”

Physician shares ways to achieve good health in the new year

JANUARY 13, 2009 – Achieving health and wellness tops the list of New Year’s resolutions every year. This time around, Dr. Amir Koohestani is offering methods to help individuals reach those goals through his “Food as Medicine” seminars.

Koohestani, the primary physician at Richfield Medical Services in Stanly County, will present his unique seminars at Pfeiffer University two consecutive Tuesdays, Jan. 20 and Jan. 27, from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. both days in the Stokes Student Center Community Room on the Misenheimer campus. The seminars are free and open to the public.

Cook Named New Executive Director of Foundation

CONCORD, N.C., January 12, 2009—Adam Cook has been named the new executive director of NorthEast Foundation. A national search was conducted by a committee from the Foundation Board to find a replacement to succeed Jim Monroe who will retire on January 14. Cook has held the position of Foundation Campaign Director since his employment with CMC-NorthEast in 2004.

A lifetime resident of Cabarrus County Cook begins his new role on January 15 replacing Monroe, who led the Foundation since first being established in 1993.

“Adam has demonstrated outstanding leadership as Campaign Director,” says Dr. Linny Baker, Chairman of the Foundation. “He has built strong relationships in our community as well as with the Foundation Board, the medical staff, and the employees of Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast. He also possesses a passion and talent for fundraising. All of these attributes and talents make him highly qualified for this position.”

Kannapolis to begin Code enforcement education campaign

Kannapolis, N.C., January 9, 2009—The City of Kannapolis is beginning a new code enforcement initiative that will work to educate residents, merchants and property owners about the various regulations for property appearance in the City.

The City will take a staged approach, targeting individual corridors and neighborhoods for the education campaign. Beginning next week, Kannapolis code enforcement officials will begin working on the Cannon Boulevard corridor and the Carver Street area.

UNC Charlotte Trustees Hold Down Tuition, Propose Fee Increase

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jan. 7, 2009– Trustees at UNC Charlotte have approved a plan that calls for no tuition increase for resident undergraduate students for the 2009-10 academic year.

Under the proposal, which requires the approval of the UNC Board of Governors, overall student fees will increase by $143 annually. Tuition will remain at the current level of $2,516, but the combined overall cost of attendance will increase by 3.3 percent.

Pfeiffer celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with Day of Service, Servant Leadership Week

JANUARY 6, 2009 – To celebrate and commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his notable legacy of service and civic action, Pfeiffer University will sponsor a day of service on Jan. 21, followed by its 12th annual Servant Leadership Week held Jan. 25-31. This year, a series of guest speakers, workshops and community service opportunities will be held on the university’s Misenheimer campus and throughout neighboring communities.

“In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the holiday as a national day of service. This series of events celebrates Dr. King’s life and is designed to be an extension of the classroom experience for our students,” said Sudie Nallo, director of service scholar programs at Pfeiffer. “There is no better way to honor the extraordinary legacy of Dr. King. These are opportunities to invite others onto our campus as well as to continue to immerse ourselves in service to our community.”

Kannapolis Explorers fire program to begin second year

Kannapolis, N.C., January 5, 2009— The Kannapolis Explorer Post #1 begins its second year in January 2009 with increased enrollment.

The Explorer program is run through the Boys Scouts of America and is designed for boys and girls ages 14-18 that have an interest in fire and/or emergency services. The group meets the 2nd and 4th Monday evening each month, excluding holidays.
