Cabarrus Pets Society Hosts Third Annual Pars for Pets Golf Benefit

Kannapolis, N.C. (April 28, 2009) – The countdown is on for the Third Annual Pars for Pets Golf Benefit hosted by the Cabarrus Pets Society, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization committed to helping place abandoned pets in loving homes.  This year’s golf fundraiser will be held at Cabarrus Country Club in Concord (N.C.) and will kick off with a shotgun start at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 and will conclude with a dinner and silent auction following the tournament.

Cabarrus Pets Society is known for its commitment to abandoned pets and for helping educate the public on pet overpopulation.  The golf benefit is the largest fundraiser held by the non-profit organization and its dedicated volunteers.  The organization relies entirely on community volunteers and monetary support to fulfil its mission.

“Carolina’s Medical Center-NorthEast Village Fest” On Schedule for Mother’s Day Weekend

KANNAPOLIS, NC (April 28, 2009) --- “Village Fest will be bigger and better than ever.  This year we’re adding a second stage and a fundraiser walk organized to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society,” exclaimed Cabarrus Events Association Executive Director, Brenda Drye.  We are very happy to announce that our presenting sponsor this year is Carolina’s Medical Center-NorthEast.” The annual festival is held each Mother’s Day weekend in Kannapolis and spans West Avenue.

The festival rolls out Friday evening, May 8 with a free gospel concert. Headlining this year is “Gold City”.  The nationally recognized entertainers are scheduled to take the new Main Stage at 7 p.m. following a performance by the choir of Central Baptist Church.  “Central’s choir isn’t just a warm up act either”, quipped Drye.  “They have been with us for years and are huge favorites”.  Ford Broadcasting and Central Baptist church are co-sponsoring the “Gold City” performance.  Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a folding chair or blanket to enjoy the concert.  The Main Stage will be at a new location this year, at the north end of West Avenue, with the North Carolina Research Campus serving as a backdrop.

On Saturday morning walkers participating in the Cabarrus Chapter of the MS Society’s fundraiser will register near the Main Stage at 8:45 a.m.   Brochures about the walk can be picked up at Southern Select Community Credit Union’s Dale Earnhardt Boulevard, Kannapolis office (near the NC Research Campus) or by going to the MS website: mssociety.org/ncp.

Charlotte Regional Partnership continues recruiting internationally

When US Airways’ new nonstop flight to Paris takes off from Charlotte on Saturday, the Charlotte Regional Partnership will be on board. The Partnership’s Executive Vice President Kenny McDonald, along with Chris Platé and Scott Millar, directors of Monroe Economic Development and the Catawba County Economic Development Corporation, respectively, are heading to the City of Light to further the region's international business connections in the energy and medical device industries.

“The Charlotte Regional Partnership has been especially targeting companies in the energy/environment and health/life sciences, in addition to the defense/security sectors for more than a year,” said Ronnie Bryant, the Partnership’s president and CEO. “We believe that these industries are sustainable and offer growth potential for the long term.”

Sundrop Murder to be featured on America’s Most Wanted

In a continuing effort to locate the Sundrop Murder suspect, Concord Detectives contacted the Fox Television Show America's Most Wanted. The AMW production crew will be in Concord on Wednesday April 22nd to produce a segment on its weekly television program. The scheduled air date for the Sun-drop case is May 23, 2009 on FOX 9pm EST/8pm CT.

Concord PD and AMW will be available for media interviews on Wednesday, April 22 at 3:00 PM Sun-drop Bottling Plant 360 Old Salisbury Concord Rd Concord, NC 28025.

On June 13th 2008 at approximately 10:00AM officers of the Concord Police Department responded to a call of an assault at the Sundrop Bottling Company on Branchview Drive in Concord.   When officers arrived they found two victims in the office area.  Both of the victims had apparently been shot.  Robbery was the apparent motive for the shootings.  Witnesses described seeing a B/M with dreadlocks leaving the business in the direction of the intersection of Branchview Drive and Cabarrus Avenue.  The suspect was described as wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

Kannapolis Environmental Stewardship Commission plans Earth Day activities

Kannapolis, N.C., April 20, 2009—The Kannapolis Environmental Stewardship Commission (ESC) and the Piedmont Farmers Market are partnering for an Earth Day Extravaganza on Saturday, April 25. Saturday marks the the opening of the market for the summer season.

The event will include many activities for families to help mark the day, including classes, information booths and games. The event will run from 9 a.m. until noon.

Concord Relay for Life

The City of Concord is partnering with all departments to participate in this year’s Relay for Life event.  2009 marks Relay’s 25th anniversary and on May 8th  teams from all over Cabarrus County will come together at Cabarrus Arena and Events Center to help raise awareness and funds to support cancer research.  The evening will kick off at 6:00 pm Friday.

The City of Concord is doing its part by hosting a Fire vs. Police Flag Football game on Saturday April 25th.  The game will take place at Concord High School beginning at 1:00 o’clock.  Admission to the game is two dollars with all benefits going to the American Cancer Society.

Charlotte Regional Partnership markets to the Midwest

On the heels of a successful marketing trip to the West Coast, the Charlotte Regional Partnership is taking on the Midwest.

The end of March, David Swenson, the Partnership’s vice president of economic services, visited more than a dozen site location advisors, clients and companies in the L.A. and San Francisco area. As a result of those contacts, half of those companies have expressed a strong interest in the 16-county Charlotte region.

Southern Select Community Credit Union Grows 2009 Scholarship to $1,000

KANNAPOLIS, NC (April 17, 2009) --- Southern Select CCU President/CEO, Huyla Jackson announced that the Kannapolis-based community credit union will award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who will enter an accredited institution of higher education for the 2009-2010 academic year.  The scholarship will be presented to a member of  its credit union community based on academic excellence, grade point average, leadership ability, personal character and need.  Ms. Jackson noted, “In today’s economic environment we felt it important to increase the level of this year’s award.”

Southern Select encourages students who are members or directly related to a current member, to apply.  They may also join and participate in the credit union which serves the 50-mile radius around Kannapolis and all of Rockingham County, NC.  “The youth of our community is our most important asset and upholding our tradition of people helping people, certainly extends to them”, she added.

Fourth Annual Caring Today Magazine and Home Instead Senior Care Essay Contest Honors Dedicated Caregivers

The Home Instead Senior Care office serving Cabarrus and Rowan Counties is again sponsoring the popular Caring Today magazine’s “Give a Caregiver a Break” essay contest to honor family caregivers for their tireless service and dedication. The contest will award $16,000 in free caregiving services to the winning essay writers. 

In 500 words or less, non-professional family caregivers can relate their caregiving experiences, including the challenges they’ve faced, how they’ve embraced their role as a caregiver for a senior loved one and inspired others.  Entries can be submitted until June 15, 2009.   Since the contest’s inception, hundreds of family caregivers have shared their personal stories.

Pfeiffer University students bring home awards from state business competition

APRIL 9, 2009 -- Several Pfeiffer University students took home awards during the 55th Annual State Leadership Conference (SLC) of the North Carolina State Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) held last week in Charlotte.

PBL is a national association of college and university students who are interested in careers in business. During the conference 336 PBL members, advisors and Professional Division members were in attendance representing most of the 36 N.C. chapters.

Students attended seminars and general assemblies for the state chapter and local region, and participated in competitive events that included objective tests, presentations and interviews.  Pfeiffer students were recognized during the formal banquet for placing in eight competitive events.  Those students were:

Charlotte Regional Partnership forum looks at what’s next in economic development

Lowe's Motor Speedway to Give Portion of April 3-11

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 3, 2009) - Lowe's Motor Speedway will honor Autism Awareness Month by contributing $10 from every ticket sold to the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600 from April 3 - April 11, to Autism Speaks. 
 
"Autism affects numerous families around the world, including many of our great fans," said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Lowe's Motor Speedway. "We've worked with local non-profit groups that help children with autism and their families through the Charlotte Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities. Villas at Forest Park to Open

Kannapolis, N.C., April 3, 2009—The Villas at Forest Park, a brand new apartment home community for senior citizens, is completed and open for residents to move in. The community was created by a public-private partnership between Douglas Development, LLC, Halcon Development, LLC, Hart Development, LLC, the local non-profit Prosperity Unlimited, Inc., the City of Kannapolis and the NC Housing Finance Agency.  The partners are holding a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new community on April 7, 2009 at 11:00am.

The 64-unit apartment home community was built for seniors 55 and older with incomes less than 60 percent of the median area income. The apartments are located at 300 South Little Texas Road near Forest Park Elementary. The one-bedroom units will rent for $252, $417, or $442 and the two-bedroom units will rent for $289, $512, or $607, based on income.

Pfeiffer offers ways to cope during difficult times with stress workshop April 21

APRIL 2, 2009 – For many, 2009 started as a particularly stressful year. As the economy worsens, stress levels are steadily on the rise. Countless individuals and families face feelings of anxiety resulting from job loss or retirement savings, or from the loss of a loved one, a family conflict or simply the stressors of daily life. To help people better cope with stress, the Pfeiffer Institute at Pfeiffer University will host a “Dealing with stress during difficult times” workshop on Tuesday, April 21.

This session, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Pfeiffer’s Charlotte campus, 4701 Park Rd.
