Huntersville, NC - To celebrate its 15th anniversary as the Carolinas’ biggest kingdom of outdoor entertainment, the Carolina Renaissance Festival has planned two months of non-stop entertainment, feasting and games, Saturdays & Sundays, October 4th through November 16th.

At the Carolina Renaissance Festival, the entire 22-acre kingdom forms the set for comic adventures, in which you can be both audience and part of the fun. With a cast of over 500 costumed characters, the festival is like a Monty Python movie come to life.

Hayes Voted No on Legislation Bailout

Washington, DC – In a day that saw the largest one-day drop on the New York Stock Exchange, Congressman Robin Hayes, of North Carolina’s 8th district, announced he joined the majority of republicans and voted against the $700 billion bailout legislation set before congress.  Hayes cited a lack of US taxpayer protections and foreign banks and investment firms being eligible for US tax dollars.

Improved Infrastructure that is Critical for Economic Growth in Cabarrus County is Provided as Part of the FY 2009 Continuing Resolution

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Robin Hayes (NC-8) today announced that he has secured $468,000 to fund the Kingston Drive Culvert Replacement project in Kannapolis.  This new funding will be provided as part of the FY 2009 Continuing Resolution, which overwhelmingly passed the U.S. House of Representatives today.  This legislation will now be sent to the Senate for consideration, and then to the President’s desk for a signature.

2-1-1, United Way of Central Carolinas community information and referral program, now makes finding help even easier with newly expanded access from cell phones.  Thanks to a generous grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation, cell phones from any of the six major providers in North Carolina: Alltel, AT&T, Nextel/Sprint, TMobile/SunCom, US Cellular and Verizon, now connect to 2-1-1.

Pfeiffer University names new director of institutional research and assessment

Following a comprehensive national search, Mary Ellen Goldstein, of Charlotte, was recently named director of institutional research and assessment at Pfeiffer University. Goldstein, who previously worked in a similar capacity at Mitchell Community College (MCC) in Statesville, N.C., began her duties at Pfeiffer earlier this month.

As director of institutional research and assessment, Goldstein’s primary responsibilities include analyzing and reporting student and administrative information, conducting and deciphering surveys and focus group data. She also provides leadership for comprehensive program reviews for all educational programs and manages federal, state, and university system reports.

English Professor Receives Top Teaching Award at UNC Charlotte

Niner Nation to Participate in Annual Race for the Cure

For the third year, the UNC Charlotte Niners for the Cure will participate in the 12th annual Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 4. The University is joining the Charlotte affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for this effort. According to its Web site, the Komen for the Cure is “the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.” It has invested nearly $1 billion toward the fight against breast cancer worldwide.

CITY OF KANNAPOLIS - Notification of Wastewater Spill

Pursuant to NC G.S. 143-215.1C, the City of Kannapolis hereby gives notice of an untreated wastewater spill to surface waters, which occurred on September 10, 2008.

The spill occurred due to torrential rain and water infiltration to the sewer system, resulting in a manhole overflowing within the Irish Buffalo Creek Basin.

It is estimated that the spill amount could have been as much as 11,250 gallons.  All repairs have been completed and no evidence of significant environmental damage has been identified.  Inspection and testing is continuing until a finding of no significant impact to surface water is confirmed.

Cabarrus economic developer named Charlotte Regional Partnership vice president

CHARLOTTE - Sept. 12, 2008 - The Charlotte Regional Partnership turned to a member of its Charlotte USA family to fill the role of vice president of investor relations.

The Partnership selected Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation recruiter Clay Andrews to fill this highly visible and critical position. The job previously had been at the director’s level, but it was elevated to emphasize its importance to the Partnership. When he joins the CRP Oct. 1, he will work closely with our current private investors and will recruit new ones.

Disaster Assistance Center Extends Hours for Flood Victims

September 11, 2008 – The Disaster Assistance Center located in the former Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office will remain open one more week to allow qualifying flood victims to apply for state and federal aid to assist with property damage from Tropical Storm Fay. To qualify for assistance, privately owned structure damages must be uninsured or under insured.

The Disaster Assistance Center is located inside the former Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office on the corner of Church Street and Corban Avenue in downtown Concord. The center will be open Friday, September 12 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.; Saturday, September 13 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; and Monday, September 15 through Friday, September, 19 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Water Use Restriction Modifications

RCCC Will Train 30-Plus State Agencies

CONCORD, N.C. — The Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration (AHR) Program at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College will provide training to North Carolina state agencies to help lower-income citizens save energy and reduce their energy expenses.

The N.C. Division of Health and Human Services’ Office of Economic Opportunity has asked the AHR Program at RCCC to train more than 30 state agencies to provide services of the state’s Weatherization Assistance Program. The program assists low-income citizens by conducting home energy audits and diagnostic testing to determine levels of carbon monoxide and identify and recommend health, safety and heating-air conditioning efficiency improvements. Heating and air conditioning systems which are inoperable, highly inefficient or pose a health threat are repaired or replaced by the program.

UNC Charlotte Recruits Large Number of New Endowed Faculty Positions
Expertise Ranges from Business to Nursing to Cancer Research

CHARLOTTE – Sept. 9, 2008 – While it is customary for a large university like UNC Charlotte to recruit talented faculty members each year, administrators are energized by the quantity and quality of appointments to endowed positions for the 2008-09 school year.

“This is the largest number of endowed positions we have filled in a single year in the history of this institution,” Provost Joan Lorden said in her recent Convocation speech to faculty and staff.  “I believe this demonstrates the kind of confidence donors have in UNC Charlotte.”

The influx of new talent, which will augment an already solid faculty, portends a dynamic future for the University, she said. Some of the endowed positions are new and some are existing ones that are being filled. Their expertise runs the gamut from business to nursing to cancer research.

LASH Brings On LEED-Accredited Engineer for Epic Development

‘Starts Off on the Right Foot’ - Cancelled

Neighborhoods and farms can now receive cost share funds

Residential neighborhoods and other suburban and urban areas now are able to apply for funds to fix soil erosion problems and improve storm-water runoff. In the past cost share allocations were available only to farms. Now, rural, suburban and urban areas are eligible for financial and technical assistance through the state’s annual cost share allocation for reducing ground water and surface water pollution associated with storm-water runoff.

Damage assessment teams from North Carolina state government will be in Cabarrus County Wednesday to evaluate public infrastructure damage as a result of heavy rains and flooding from Tropical Storm Fay. Concord, Kannapolis and Mount Pleasant along with Cabarrus County have reported damage to public infrastructure from the storm. Preliminary reports show the following damage estimates: Cabarrus County, $40,000, Concord, $ 2,216,900, Kannapolis, $ 1,711,540; Mount Pleasant, $ 74,480; Cabarrus County Schools, $40,000.

Eller Resigns as Director of Cabarrus County DSS

John Eller will resign as director of Cabarrus County Department of Social Services (DSS) effective in late October.

“The decision to leave Cabarrus County DSS was not an easy one to make as I was not seeking employment elsewhere and had hoped to remain here for years to come,” Eller said. 

Eller has accepted a position as director of Catawba County Department of Social Services, where he will fill the shoes of mentor and retiring director Bobby Boyd.

Cabarrus County Meets Criteria for Disaster Assistance

Cabarrus County rescinded its state of emergency at 3 p.m. today as imminent danger from damages by Tropical Storm Fay has passed. However, Cabarrus County Emergency Management personnel are keeping a watchful eye on Tropical Storm Hanna which may bring an additional six inches of rainfall to Cabarrus County near the second week in September.
