Managing crime and justice in Charlotte is a challenge. UNC Charlotte’s forum is designed to provide an open dialogue between faculty and community leaders to identify ways that the University and the Criminal Justice Department can assist community agencies with research and support.

More than forty UNC Charlotte political science students are participating in a service learning project in conjunction with Democracy North Carolina in an effort to involve students in non-partisan efforts to mobilize voters. Their goal is to inspire and encourage students to vote.
Assistant Professor of Political Science, Martha Kropf’s students have participated in door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and on-campus efforts informing voters about same day registration and early voting at UNC Charlotte. North Carolina is a state that offers same day voter registration.

Kannapolis, N.C., October 29, 2008—The City of Kannapolis recently launched a community development effort that will work to improve less stable neighborhoods within the City. The first area that the City will focus on includes the neighborhoods near the old Carver School – Nightown, Happy Hollow, Rutledgetown, and Newtown.
Working with consultants from NCSU and NC A&T, the City is developing a strategic plan to address the area’s unique needs, from working with current residents to learn their vision for the neighborhoods’ future to engaging property owners and non-profit organizations to improve the appearance and infrastructure in the area. City representatives are working with residents, property owners, schools, churches, and others to encourage their participation.

The publication, formerly known as Viva Greenville, recently relocated its headquarters to the Ballantyne area.

Kannapolis, N.C., Oct. 13, 2008 – To coincide with the grand opening of its nationally acclaimed golf course today, Castle & Cooke Carolinas Realty LLC has announced the release of $3.96 million worth of homesites.
The 28 homesites include golf, lake and wooded views. They range in price from $105,000 to $240,000 and in size from .53 to 1.45 acres. Site tours will begin on Oct. 18, and the homesites will be released for sale on Oct. 25.

Charlotte, NC, October 4, 2008 -- Over 6,500 people, including individuals with autism, their families and friends, joined together yesterday at Autism Speaks' Carolinas Walk Now for Autism to raise funds for critical scientific research and to increase awareness about the nation's fastest-growing developmental disorder, now diagnosed in one in every 150 children. The walk, which stepped off from Lowe's Motor Speedway, has thus far raised over $450,000 -- all of which will be dedicated to supporting critical scientific research into the cause of autism, better treatments and a cure -- for the national advocacy organization Autism Speaks.
Established in 2000, the Walk Now for Autism events are the signature fundraising events for Autism Speaks and have attracted hundreds of thousands of walkers worldwide who have raised tens of millions of dollars for autism research. Last year's Carolinas walk raised over $380,000 and more than $26 million was raised nationally at walks held over 70 locations across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

As a result of the continued recovery of our water supplies we are able to further amend our water use restrictions allowing customers an additional day of outdoor residential landscape irrigation on Tuesdays, until November 30, 2008. While lake and stream flows are at or near normal, we will continue to monitor water levels in the event they fall below accepted levels. The improvements give us comfort in allowing additional outdoor water use for customers considering to reestablish their lawns or install new plants. Since our previous amendment to our water use restrictions we observed less than a one percent change to our overall system demands that is largely attributed to the efforts of our customers to ensure conservation of our water resources.
