Local Food Initiative Could Mean Fresher and Safer Food for N.C. Consumers
Friday, November 28, 2008 (127 reads)

November 26, 2008 – As we officially enter the holiday season, food plays a key role in holiday festivities and gift giving. Lots of families will enjoy lovingly prepared homemade recipes – without stopping to realize that homemade does not necessarily mean fresh and local. How far did that turkey travel to get to your family’s table? Were the apples used in your homemade pie grown here in North Carolina, or shipped in from out of state?

A new movement is underway in North Carolina to make locating and buying locally produced foods easier for consumers and those in the food industry. The overall goal is to build a local food system in North Carolina that will supply the majority of local food needs, to provide more access to fresh foods and to increase the safety of our foods. The effort also can protect open space, decrease the use of fossil fuels and protect our environment by relying less on food shipped here from across the country.

Saturday, November 15, 2008 (124 reads)

November 13, 2008 – Bonds to finance construction of Cabarrus County’s jail housing unit went on the market today at a rate of 4.94 percent for the $58.8 million bond sale. Cabarrus County officials made a choice to wait to sell these bonds until the market was more favorable. With guidance from the county’s underwriters, Cabarrus County diligently watched the market to select the best date.

The 4.94 percent interest rate is only 0.30 percent higher than the rate just prior to the shift in the economy.  “We wanted to be prudent and wait for the right opportunity to sell,” said Pam Dubois, Cabarrus County Deputy Manager and Finance Director. “This is a great rate, and we wanted to get ahead of other local governments selling their bonds, since there is so much backed up demand in the market.”
