The City of Concord will officially open Fire Station Number 9 on Wednesday, December 17th at 3:00 p.m. This ceremony and celebration is open to the public with refreshments served after the ceremony. Tours of the facility will be available with Fire and Life Safety Staff. The ceremony will include brief remarks from the Mayor and Officers with the Fire Department. After the comments, all attendees will participate in the official housing of the fire equipment that has been assigned to the new station.
"This is a tradition that allows everyone in the community to participate. The Housing ceremony is a tradition born in the 1830's with the proliferation of fire and hose companies in eastern cities. Many new companies purchased - or borrowed -used equipment from other companies.
The selling company would often deliver the engine or carriage and have the honor of "housing" it at its new owner's house. Many times, when a newly-built engine or carriage arrived, one of the city's companies would be given the honor of escorting it to the owning company's house and placing it in service. Part of the traditional housing ceremony includes having the firefighters push the new apparatus into the firehouse which stemmed from the time of horse drawn equipment could not be easily be backed into the building by the horses. Now we have everyone at the ceremony house the new Pierce Pumper for good luck," commented Chief Holloway.
Fire Station No. 9's first day of service was December 4, 2008. Personnel at this station are serving businesses and neighborhoods on the western side of Concord. Fifteen firefighters are assigned to staff Station 9 along with three Battalion Chiefs who have created the new Fire Battalion 2. A 2009 Pierce Pumper was purchased and will be housed at this Station.
Four City Departments share this facility. In addition to Fire, Police will have a substation at this location, Fleet Services will provide an additional fueling station, and Parks and Recreation will schedule the Community Room, which is available for use by all citizens for meetings, birthday parties, Homeowner Association meetings or any other gatherings.
As mentioned, located at the Fire Station 9 site is a fueling station for city vehicles from all departments working in the western part of the city. In 2008, the City began an initiative to use alternative fuels, this new fueling station was funded. Biodiesel was chosen as the most beneficial alternative fuel for the City, thereby displacing 80,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year.
Considered a "Battalion Station" for the Fire Department, Station 9 will serve as the focal point for coordinated response in Battalion 2 providing fire & rescue service to the western side of Concord and the I-85 corridor. The companies assigned to this station also provide critical service to existing areas of the city currently served by Engines 5, 6, and 7.
The station is located at the intersection of Ivey Cline Road and Poplar Tent Road adjacent to Interstate 85. Units assigned to this station include: Engine Company 9, Ladder Company 9, Haz-Mat 9, Decon 9, and Battalion 2. Fire Station 9 also includes one Community/Training Room which can be sub-divided for use by the public.
