Kannapolis Explorers fire program to begin second year

Kannapolis, N.C., January 5, 2009— The Kannapolis Explorer Post #1 begins its second year in January 2009 with increased enrollment.

The Explorer program is run through the Boys Scouts of America and is designed for boys and girls ages 14-18 that have an interest in fire and/or emergency services. The group meets the 2nd and 4th Monday evening each month, excluding holidays.

“We are so pleased to have had such a successful first year and are looking forward to 2009,” says KFD Captain Brad Jordan.

During the first year the Explorers learned many aspects of the fire service, took part in the ride along program, and participated in special events such as Village Fest and the Fire Department open house.

During each two hour meeting, Explorers have an opportunity to complete homework, socialize and participate in training activities. Training sessions vary but range from fire department history to the use of tools and equipment. Explorers learn new skills such as taking blood pressures, repelling and using extrication tools.

“I have really enjoyed my time in the Explorer program,” says Explorer Joey Childress.  “I have learned a lot about the fire service and its role in the community,” he adds.

In addition to his attendance in regularly scheduled meetings, Childress has taken opportunities to participate in activities such as visiting preschool classes, modeling protective gear to young children, running the fire safety house and riding in the Kannapolis Christmas Parade.

The popularity of the Kannapolis Explorer program has dramatically increased from its beginnings one year ago.  At the annual registration meeting in early December 24 new teens signed up to join the program.

“This growth is quite surprising,” says Captain Jordan. “We have a lot of great activities planned for 2009 and are happy to see so many of these young ladies and gentlemen get involved.”
