From Mercenary to Miner

“It’s Revolutionary” Event

Reed Gold Mine will host the event “From Mercenary to Miner”, part of the “It’s Revolutionary” themed events on Saturday, June 3rd. John Reed was a Hessian Soldier from Germany who fought with the British during the Revolutionary War. He participated in military campaigns through North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, ending up in Savannah in 1782. He decided to desert his military service there, and made his way back to Cabarrus County, NC, already home to a large German settlement. This program explores the life of John Reed while he served as a Hessian Soldier, and his early years living in Cabarrus County before the gold discovery in 1799. Visitors can interact with a Hessian Soldier and view musket demonstrations throughout the day. Along with the special activities, visitors can walk through the visitor center, take the underground mine tour, see an 1890s-era operating stamp mill and pan for gold. There is no charge for the event, only charge is for gold panning. Panning costs $3.21 and is done April through October.
