Uncork Cabarrus County: Local Wine Tours & Pairings

Jun 14, 2016 02:49PM ● By Melanie Heisinger

Did you know that North Carolina is the only place in the world where every major type of grape is grown?  Whether downtown or cruising through the countryside, you can sample Cabarrus County’s treats from the vine along with the perfect pairings.

Day 1: Uncork Downtown Concord

The friendly folks at Cougar Run Winery have turned their hobby into a way of life. Offering hand crafted wines made in small batches, this pet-friendly winery hosts tours of up to 10 people. Interested in the art? Cougar Run is also a retailer of wine making equipment. Stop in for a few samples and to swap stories or share ideas.

Just down the road from Cougar Run, Cabo Winery has some wine tasting and wine accessories to offer. Cabo Winery prides themselves on being inviting for wine beginning and connoisseurs alike. Their relaxed atmosphere will make you feel right at home, and experts will assist you in finding your next favorite wine.

There’s nothing wrong with dessert before dinner! Savor the decadent creations of Chefs Jean Luc and Ann Marie Barrucand at Chocolatier Barrucand. With over 100 varieties of cakes, pastries, plated desserts and chocolates, the sweet smell of this charming corner store is intoxicating! Enjoy wine by the glass, bottle or flight.

Just steps away, dinner at Union Street Bistro provides the perfect blend of casual and upscale atmosphere and promises to satisfy the palette. Menu specialties including Carolina Grouper, Tuscan Chicken and the chef's signature Crab Cakes highlight the offerings of this cozy locally owned and operated bistro.

In between sips, explore Downtown Concord. You’ll be surrounded by museums, galleries, a botanical garden and plenty of boutique shopping.

Day 2: Go for Gold—Sample sweet White Gold and pan for the yellow kind.

Pack a picnic basket and strap in for the scenic drive through Cabarrus County’s back roads. Less than 30 minutes away from Concord, Midland, NC is home to family-owned Rocky River Vineyards. At the Tasting Bar, sample Muscadine wines, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet sauvignon, then pick up your favorite in the gift shop along with creations from regional artisans. Lounge on the porch or take the self-guided walking tour—the map is complete with a list of creatures you’re likely to meet along the way!

Travel North on 27 to kick back at Dennis Vineyards Winery and enjoy a quick tasting before heading back. Dennis Vineyards is family owned and operated with over ten acres of mature vineyards and a quaint tasting room. Not only is the wine tasty, but the sights lovely.

While traveling back, and when you’re minutes away from the site of the first discovery of gold in the US, it’s hard not to stop and see where it all began. While in Midland, carve out some time to navigate the underground mine tunnels and pan for gold at Reed Gold Mine.

Head back to town for one last glass! Located in the quaint city of Kannapolis in Cabarrus County, Brew is a local favorite. Having dinner inside the historic Durham home (or on the deck with live music!) is an ideal way to end the weekend— relaxed and carefree.  Not ready to head home just yet? Take in another historic must-see in Kannapolis. Stroll down Main Street and catch a movie at the GEM Theatre, one of the oldest single-screen movie theatres still in operation.

Whether you are planning a day trip or a weekend getaway, there are plenty of local spots to explore and enjoy. For more ideas on wineries to visit, the list below will help you decide, should you wish to venture further. Happy trails!
