Red Cross Hosts First of Several Free Emergency Preparedness Camps

Jun 23, 2016 02:39PM ● By Jason Huddle

The Red Cross, with the help of Cabarrus County Emergency Management, Concord Fire and Life Safety, Kannapolis Fire Department, Rowan County Emergency Management, SERVPRO, Cabarrus County Sheriff's Department, Concord Police Department, Kannapolis City Parks and Recreation, Kannapolis Police Department, Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, and the North Carolina Forestry Service, launched the first of several “Camp Ready Kids” that will take place in various locations throughout Cabarrus and Rowan Counties this summer.

The camps are absolutely free and children (rising first graders through fifth graders) are only asked to bring their own bag lunch. Each Camp takes place over two days and teaches children emergency preparedness in various situations. Topics during each camp include Fire Prevention, Gun Safety, Cyber Safety/Bullying, Water Safety and Environmental Education. Campers are also treated to a K-9 demonstrations and taught the dangers of drugs.

“If they learn while they're young, they will grow up to be more safety minded adults,” said Maria Bostian, of the KFD, which has been involved with the annual summer camps since they began almost a decade ago. Bostian also went on to say that this kind of training can pay off quickly. She cited an example where a Kannapolis preschooler, who had been through similar training in a different program, saved her mother’s life during a medical emergency on the side of a road. “We also believe that camps like this may serve as a recruitment tool for those students who think they might want a career in emergency services,” Bostian also said. However, she acknowledged we’ll have to wait t a few years to see if that proves true.
