Common Mistakes People Make When Moving

Feb 17, 2021 07:58AM ● By Kristy Huddle

Moving is a chaotic time in almost everyone’s lives. There is so much to keep track of and pay for that you can be forgiven for forgetting a few things. If you’re going to move sometime soon, you may already be worrying about what could go wrong or how you’ll get everything done. We’ve compiled this list of the most common mistakes people make when moving as a guide to what not to do when your moving day comes.

Not Downsizing

Moving is the perfect time in your life to think about downsizing. Not only will it help you pare down on things you no longer want or need, but it also makes moving a lot easier. The more you get rid of, the less stuff you’ll end up having to move. To really cut down on how long your move will take, grab a rental dumpster and go on a tossing spree.

Packing Inefficiently

There are a few packing mistakes that people make when they’re moving. Most people don’t think twice about shoving everything wherever it happens to fit. If you want to avoid an annoying problem while unpacking, consider these tips:

  • Don’t package large items in large boxes. Try to put larger items in as small a box as you can fit it in
  • Use towels and clothes to protect fragile items instead of bubble wrap
  • Clothes can often be rolled up and folded more than you think
  • Keep everything that will go in the same room together to avoid searching for little things when you arrive

Not Labeling Everything

Labelling will become one of your greatest friends when you’re planning a move. It helps with both packing and unpacking. Labelling boxes properly lets you know what you’ve already finished and how much more you have to go. When unpacking, those labels will be immensely helpful for knowing which room to put everything in.

Doing Everything Yourself

Moving is a long and difficult process, but don’t feel like you need to do it alone. While you can potentially save a little money by not hiring movers, the extra hassle of moving things yourself may not be worth it. Also, keep in mind that you have people in your life that will help you. We often avoid asking for help when moving because it’s such a big task. However, having some help will really get the ball rolling faster.

Leaving Everything Until Later

You wouldn’t be the first person to procrastinate on their moving schedule. Fight the urge to put things off until later or you’ll be scrambling when the day arrives. Moving is stressful enough as it is, don’t make it even harder on yourself by giving yourself more work to do with less time to do it.
